Questions:

What is the main source of error for calculating velocity from tangent lines on your graph?

What is the shape of a position vs. time graph and a velocity vs. time graph for a falling object?

Why do you have to compute the velocity for each point in your data? Why can’t you just find it from the first and last points in your data table?

Answer #1

1) Graph is averaging technique. Hence error will arise due to averaging.

Position time graph is rectangular hyperbola. Position in successive seconds is in ratio of odd multiples of initial displacement..

Velocity time graph is a straight line. Slope of graph is acceleration. For a falling object acceleration is constant. Hence its alinear graph.

To get a good linear fit, precession should be more. Then the error will be less. Hence number of observations should be large. Hence velocity is measured at more interval then initial and final.

The US government and the Federal Reserve is a great source for economic data. The Federal Reserve site below will allow you to create graphs using data from the government.  Create a graph that includes a measure of money such as M1 or M2, consumer price index, unemployment rate and real gross domestic product over time. Put time on the horizontal axis of your graph and the other variables on the vertical axis. Use monthly data that covers a time period...

Finding the Spring Constant We can describe an oscillating mass in terms of its position, velocity, and acceleration as a function of time. We can also describe the system from an energy perspective. In this experiment, you will measure the position and velocity as a function of time for an oscillating mass and spring system, and from those data, plot the kinetic and potential energies of the system. Energy is present in three forms for the mass and spring system....

The vertical displacement is symmetric about the origin in the y-dimension. The speed of the waves passing your testing location is 5.30m/s and the waves are moving toward shore. At t=0, a wave crest, at its maximum vertical displacement, passes your testing...
