Which will have the larger charge? A flat capacitor or a rolled up capacitor? Discuss in full detail.

Answer #1

In general capacitance, C=e0.A/d

and charge Q=CV

i.e capacitance and charge contained are directly propotional. and capacitance is directly propotional to area of plates. the capacitance of a rolled up capacitor is double to that of a plate capacitor of equal surface area - this is based on the fact that once rolled up, each layer has two surfaces facing an oppositely charged surface (one that is above and one below). Thus there would be + - - + + - - + + etc. layers.

A parallel plate capacitor with separation, d, is charged up to a surface charge density σ0. a) The plates are now disconnected from the charging device. The separation between the plates is now increased from d to D (D > d). How much work per unit area is done by the agent causing the increase in separation? b) When the plates are at a separation, d, and charge density σ0, they are attached to a battery that maintains the voltage...

A capacitor with an unknown capacitance is charged up to a voltage of V1 = 14.3 V using a battery. The capacitor is then disconnected from the battery, and the battery is taken away. This capacitor is then connected to a second capacitor with terminal A to terminal A, and terminal B to terminal B. The second capacitor has a capacitance of C2 = 8.16 mF. This second capacitor didn’t have any electric charge on it before the connections were...
