Einstein changed the game with his General Theory of Relativity. This theory describes how matter tells space how to curve and curved space tells matter how to move. What are the issues with a 2-D model of space as a giant rubber sheet? How does it correctly model space-time and how does it fail to do so?
A 2-D model of space as a giant rubber sheet reduces the complex nature of General Relativity. It can easily illustrate GR. Rubber sheet bend when a heavy ball is placed at the center of sheet. Now if we put some small balls at the corner they will starts to move around the ball due to curvature of sheet. This motion is not due to gravity- a force. Similar to this model star on spacetime 4-D creates curvature and planets moves around stars due to this curvature.
This model fail when we come with bending if light. Light is not bend by rubber sheet curvature but it bent by spacetime curvature.
