Do electron diffraction experiments give different information about crystals than can be obtained from x-ray diffraction experiments? From neutron diffraction experiments? Discuss.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The results with different diffraction may differ because electron diffraction and neutron diffraction is a kind of particle behaving as wave whose wavelength given by debroglie wavelength which further depends on momentum of the particle but in diffraction calculation we use wavelength as an important part of calculation. Hence, difference in momentum led to difference in wavelenth which further enhance the result of diffraction experiments.

On other side, X-ray is a kind of wave which have fixed wavelength.

Avogadro’s number has been determined by about 20 different methods (amazing, right?). In one approach, the spacing between layers of atoms in a crystalline lattice is used. X-ray diffraction experiments of sodium chloride have shown the distance between adjacent Na+ and Cl- ions in the face centered cubic crystal structure is 2.819 x 10-8 cm. The density of solid NaCl is 2.165 g/cm3 (it’s easy to measure this in the lab). From this information, and calculating the molar mass of...

You obtain two X-ray diffraction patterns from a metal sample. The first pattern is recorded prior to the metal being work hardened, and the second is taken after the treatment. If you were to compare the before and after patterns, what is likely to be the main difference between them and why do we see this difference?
