A 0.0111-kg bullet is fired straight up at a falling wooden block that has a mass of 3.34 kg. The bullet has a speed of 759 m/s when it strikes the block. The block originally was dropped from rest from the top of a building and had been falling for a time t when the collision with the bullet occurs. As a result of the collision, the block (with the bullet in it) reverses direction, rises, and comes to a momentary halt at the top of the building. Find the time t.

When jumping straight down, you can be seriously injured if you land stiff-legged. One way to avoid injury is to bend your knees upon landing to reduce the force of the impact. A 73.2-kg man just before contact with the ground has a speed of 3.19 m/s. (a) In a stiff-legged landing he comes to a halt in 4.74 ms. Find the magnitude of the average net force that acts on him during this time. (b) When he bends his...

A 0.0392-kg bullet is fired horizontally into a 2.04-kg wooden block attached to one end of a massless, horizontal spring (k = 838 N/m). The other end of the spring is fixed in place, and the spring is unstrained initially. The block rests on a horizontal, frictionless surface. The bullet strikes the block perpendicularly and quickly comes to a halt within it. As a result of this completely inelastic collision, the spring is compressed along its axis and causes the...

a bullet of mass m=5g is fired into a wooden block with mass M= 0.995 kg which then compresses a spring (k=100N/m by a distance of x=0.1 before coming to rest. the bullet remains embedded in the wooden block. ignore friction between the block and table. a) what is initial speed of the bullet? b) calculate total kinetic energy of the bullet block-system immediately before and after the collision. is the collision between the bullet and the block elastic or...

A bullet of mass 6.0g is fired horizontally into a 2.6kg wooden block at rest on a horizontal surface. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and surface is 0.38. The bullet comes to rest in the block, which moves 1.8m. 1)What is the speed of the block immediately after the bullet comes to rest within it? 2)At what speed is the bullet fired?

A bullet of mass 4.5 g is fired horizontally into a 2.4 kg wooden block at rest on a horizontal surface. The bullet is embedded in the block. The speed of the block immediately after the bullet stops relative to it is 2.7 m/s. At what speed is the bullet fired?

A bullet with mass m1 = 3.00 g is fired into a wooden block of mass m2 = 1.00 kg, that hangs like a pendulum. The bullet is embedded in the block (complete inelastic collision). The block (with the bullet embedded in it) goes h = 30.0 cm high after collision. Calculate the speed of the bullet before it hit the block.

A small wooden block with mass 0.750 kg is suspended from the lower end of a light cord that is 1.72 m long. The block is initially at rest. A bullet with mass 0.0136 kg is fired at the block with a horizontal velocity v0. The bullet strikes the block and becomes embedded in it. After the collision the combined object swings on the end of the cord. When the block has risen a vertical height of 0.700 m ,...

5. A bullet with a mass 0.850 g is fired in to a hanging block which is free to swing (recall ballistic pendulum). Mass of the hanging block is 6.4 kg. The bullet comes to rest as it is fired to the block and the block + bullet then swing upward vertically displacing the center of mass of the system by 7. 2 cm before the system comes momentarily to rest at the end of the arc. A bullet of mass 12.4 g is fired into an initially stationary block and comes to rest in the block. The block, of mass 1.15 kg, is subject to no horizontal external forces during the collision with the bullet. After the collision, the block is observed to move at a speed of 4.00 m
