Figure out the significance of parameters m,k in the Maxwell Boltzmann function. Re-write the Maxwell Boltzmann function in terms of R and M, where M is the molar mass of the gas.

Answer #1

The Maxwell Boltzmann function is

In this function, is the mass of each particle(could be either gas atom or molecule).

and is the Boltzmann constant which relates the average kinetic energy of particles in a gas with the temperature of the gas.

Molar mass is defined as the mass of 1 mole of gas. And 1 mole of gas Avogadro number of particles. Therefore the molar mass, M and mass of a single particle is related as follows

where is the Avogadro number

The Maxwell Boltzmann function can be rewritten as

where we have multiplied and divided the factors by Avogardo number.

Now use where M is the molar mass

and where R is the molar gas constant. Therefore the function becomes

This is the Maxwell Boltzmann function in terms of R and M.

The Stern-Zartman Experiment verified Maxwell-Boltzmann speed distribution. In one version of the experiment, a beam of silver atoms emerges from the nozzle and enters the rotating glass cylinder (diameter: 1m) through a single slot as shown. The atoms travel along the cylinder’s diameter, while the cylinder rotates counter-clockwise at 100 rev/s. As result the atoms are deposited on the side wall of the cylinder forming a silver layer. After experiment is concluded the cylinder is removed from vacuum system and...
