Two identical pellet guns are fired simultaneously from the edge of a cliff. These guns impart an initial speed of 30 m/s to each pellet. Gun A is fired straight upward with the pellet eventually hitting the ground beneath the cliff. Gun b is fired straight downward. Ignore air resistance. Assume g=10 m/s/s.

A. How long after pellet B hits the ground does pellet A hit.

B. If the pellet hits the ground with an impact speed of 60 m/s, how high is the cliff?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) Since we see that pellet A will come back to the top of the clip with a velocity = -30 m/s , from the cliff down, both the pellets will reach with same time, so the difference is the time it takes for A to go up and come back to the cliff

we have,

V= V0 + (a*t)

where, V = final speed of pellet ( coming down) = -30 m/s ,

V0 = initial speed of pellet = 30 m/s,

g = accleration due to gravity = -9.8 m/s2

therefore

-30 = 30 +(-10)*t

implies that time t = 6.00 seconds

b) now if the pellet hits the ground with speed of 60 m/s, then

distance = speed * time = 6.00 * 60 = 360 m

Review Conceptual Example 15 before attempting this problem. Two identical pellet guns are fired simultaneously from the edge of a cliff. These guns impart an initial speed of 22.3 m/s to each pellet. Gun A is fired straight upward, with the pellet going up and then falling back down, eventually hitting the ground beneath the cliff. Gun B is fired straight downward. In the absence of air resistance, how long after pellet B hits the ground does pellet A hit...

A person standing at the edge of a cliff throws one ball straight up and another ball straight down at the same initial speed. Neglecting air resistance, the ball to hit the ground below the cliff with the greater speed is the one initially thrown 1. Consider two projectiles that can be shot upward by spring guns. Object A is made of solid aluminum and has a mass of 50 grams. Object B is made of cast iron and has a mass of 200 grams. For this problem, you may take the gravitational field strength to be g = 10 N/kg. i. Masses A and B are both shot straight upward at the same time. Mass A is shot with a speed of 2 m/s and...

A cliff diver positions herself on a cliff that angles downwards towards the edge. The length of the top of the cliff is 50.0 m and the angle of the cliff is θ = 20.0° below the horizontal. The cliff diver runs towards the edge of the cliff with a constant speed, and reaches the edge of the cliff in a time of 5.80 s. After running straight off the edge of the cliff (without jumping up), the diver falls...
