3. Is thermoelectric emission applied in a semiconductor diode? Explain.

3. Is thermoelectric emission applied in a semiconductor diode? Explain.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

thermionic diodes were a common early form of diode, most modern diodes are some type of semiconductor diode. Materials like silicon and germanium are often used because they have no free electrons, meaning they cannot easily transmit electricity and tend to serve as insulators. However, by doping these materials their chemical properties can be altered. When doping silicon, there are two types of impurities that can be added to turn silicon into a semi-conductive material: N-type and P-type.

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device (p-n junction diode) that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. LEDs are becoming the most popular light sources because they are much more energy efficient than conventional incandescent light sources. While the "white" light produced by a light bulb or the sun is a blend of many different colors, and these sources typically produce a large amount of heat, LEDs release only one particular color of light, and...
