Is the filament thickness of 60 Watt bulb is greater than 100 watts bulb filament? How does thickness effects brightness at fixed voltage?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Yes

This is because the electric power is directly proportional to the resistance and the resistance is inversely proportional to the diameter of the wire, so the wire with the lower diameter leads to higher power.

Hence filament of 60W bulb will thicker than filament of 100W

bulb with a thicker filament should glow brighter as more power can be dissipated due to a lower resistance (P= V^2/R).

Sice voltage is constant so if we increase the thickness i.e its diameter than lower the rasistance( R= row L/A)and hence higher the power i.e higher the energy conversion means higher the brightbess

The average 60-watt (a unit of power) bulb emits about 800 lumens (a measure of brightness) of light. Suppose the population standard deviation is 30 lumens. Also suppose you're testing a new watt bulb to see if it emits more light with the same 60 watts of power. With a sample of 100 bulbs and 99% confidence, what is the minimum average your sample can have and still be counted as statistically significant?

A 100-watt light bulb has an average brightness of 1640 lumens, with a standard deviation of 62 lumens. Suppose that the brightness of bulbs follows normal distribution, then (2). Light bulbs are often rated by the wattage of the bulb, i.e. 60-watt or 90-watt rated bulbs are common. This can be misleading because if you attach the same bulb to different voltage sources they will produce a different power output. The rating is with the assumption that you are connect- ing it to a standard voltage, like the 120 volts that come from the wall outlet (for this problem lets ignore the effects of alternating current). (a) If the...
