A stunt plane is in a movie and needs to do a loop-the-loop in air. If the radius of the loop is 10 m what is the minimum speed a pilot needs to take so that they don’t fall out of the plane?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Gravitational acceleration = g = 9.81 m/s2

Mass of the pilot = m

Weight of the pilot = W

Radius of the loop = R = 10 m

Minimum speed of the pilot = V

For minimum speed at the top of the loop the normal force on the pilot from the seat is zero, which means the required centripetal force for the circular motion of the pilot is provided by the pilot's weight.

Centripetal force required = F

V = 9.9 m/s

Minimum speed a pilot needs so that they don't fall out of the plane = 9.9 m/s

In an adventure movie, a 68 kg stunt woman slips off a ledge, falls 7.5 m and lands in a huge air bag. Her vertical speed when initially leaving the ledge was zero. Her speed just before she hit the air bag was 10 m/s. a) What is the woman’s change in kinetic energy after she comes into contact with the bag? A movie stunt performer is filming a scene where he swings across a river on a vine. The safety crew must use a vine with enough strength so that it doesn't break while swinging. The stunt performer's mass is 80.0 kg, the vine is 12.0 m long, and the speed of the stunt performer at the bottom of the swing has been determined to be 8.60 m/s. What is the minimum tension force (in N) the vine must be able...

A new roller coaster contains a loop-the-loop in which the car and rider are completely upside down. If the radius of the loop is 17.6 m, with what minimum speed must the car traverse the loop so that the rider does not fall out while upside down at the top? Assume the rider is not strapped to the car. (Give answer to the nearest 0.1 m/s)
