In simple harmonic motion(simple pendulum), the displacement is maximum when the:

A.

velocity is maximum

B.

speed is maximum

C.

kinetic energy is maximum

D.

velocity is zero

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In case of simple harmonic motion ( for example, the motion of a simple pendulum), the object moves back and forth between two fixed points (or, end points) . The object upon reaching one end point, reverses its direction which means at the end points, the velocity of the object becomes zero. The displacement of the object is maximum (from the equilibrium point) when it reaches one of the end points where the velocity of the object becomes zero.

Option (D) is the correct choice.

Let’s think back to the lab for simple harmonic motion. Consider the setup for the simple pendulum. The length of the pendulum is 0.60 m and the bob has inertia 0.50 kg (assume mass of the string is negligible, and small angular displacements). You conduct two experiments (A and B) to investigate the physics of simple harmonic motion. For experiment A, you pull the pendulum 5 ◦ , or π 36 radians. In experiment B, the angular displacement is 10◦...
