The motor of an early V-2 rocket produces a fairly constant force on the ship by ejecting hot gases through a nozzle at the rear of the ship. Typical data are: weight of ship=32,000 lbs, force from rocket engine = 60,000 lb acting for 50 seconds, rate of gas ejection= 12 slugs/second.

(a) At what speed (relative to the ship) must the gas leave the rocket to produce the 60,000 lb thrust?

(b) If the rocket did not become lighter as it went up, how high would it go if traveling straight up from the earth? (first, find upward acceleration during the period of the thrust)
