Frequency can be expressed as the rate at which any event occurs over a perticular period of time. In the case of wave it is defined as the number of crests of wave move past at a perticular point in unit time. See the figure
Frequency directly related to the energy of the wave. If the wave has higher frequency or have higher energy then it will move to a distance having lower frequency and vice versa. In the case of high frequency the crests are closer than the lower one.
There are many ways to change frequency of a wave and one of them is by Raman Scattering. In Raman scattering we have the waves having frequency slightly lesser and greater than the incident wave. The other methods are Frequenct doubling, Non linear optical process, compton scattering etc.
