The average human metabolizes 2000 kcal/day. Some of this energy is converted into work, but the majority is wasted heat. With a skin area of 1.50 m2 , a skin temperature of 27.0o C, and an effective emissivity of e = 0.600, some of this wasted heat is released into the 20.0o C environment via radiation. The rest of the waste heat is removed by evaporating water, either as perspiration or from the lungs during breathing. At core body temperature (37.0o C), the latent heat of vaporization of water is 575 cal/g. The average person requires eight 8 oz. glasses of water per day to stay hydrated; for this problem assume that it is all lost via evaporation. Under these conditions, what is the efficiency of the human body converting energy to work?

Answer #1

heat loss due to radiation is

heat lost due vaporization is

workdone = 2000 - 1.043-769.2 = 1229.757

effiicency = workdone/energy = 1229/2000 = 0.615 i.e 61.5%

A typical human has a mass of 70 kg and produces about 2000 kcal of metabolic heat per day. Find the rate of heat production in watts and in calories per hour. If none of the metabolic heat were lost, and assuming that the specific heat of the human body is 1.0 cal/g·°C, find the rate at which the body temperature would rise (°C per hour).

7)When you jog, most of the food energy you burn above your basal metabolic rate (BMR) ends up as internal energy that would raise your body temperature if it were not eliminated. The evaporation of perspiration is the primary mechanism for eliminating this energy. Determine the amount of water you lose to evaporation when running for 38 minutes at a rate that uses 400 kcal/h above your BMR. (That amount is often considered to be the "maximum fat-burning" energy output....

28. On a certain dry sunny day, a swimming pool’s temperature would rise by 55 C if not for evaporation. What fraction of the water must evaporate to remove precisely enough energy to keep the temperature constant? Water at 37 C has a latent heat of vaporization of Lv=580 kcal/kg.

this is a thermodynamics course We want to model energy and mass balance issues involved in strenuous exercise, for example the running of a marathon. Suppose a 70 kg marathon runner runs at an ≈8 minute/mile pace, completing the 26.2 mile race distance in 210 minutes, or 3.5 hours. a.) Physiological measurements indicate that the total power consumed by an average weight runner (70 kg) at a pace of 8 minutes/mile is about 900 kcal/hour. What is the total energy...
