If your body has an average density of 989 kg/m3, what fraction of you will be submerged when floating gently in fresh water? What fraction of you will be submerged when floating gently in salt water, which has a density of 1027 kg/m3?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

If p is the fraction of your body submerged, then the submerged part is can be expressed as

The force pusing upward is equal to force pushing downward

p*V*dwater*g = (dyou)*V*g

Here, V is volume, g is gravity, and d represents density

Density of fresh water, 1000 kg/m3

p = dyou / d water = 989 kg/m3 / 1000 kg/m3 = 0.989

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In salt water,

p = dyou / d water = 989 kg/m3 / 1027 kg/m3 = 0.9629

In three significant digits

p = 0.963

Chapter 14, Problem 041 What fraction of the volume of an iceberg (density 917 kg/m3) would be visible if the iceberg floats in (a) the ocean (salt water, density 1024 kg/m3) and (b) in a river (fresh water, density 998 kg/m3)? (When salt water freezes to form ice, the salt is excluded. So, an iceberg could provide fresh water to a community.)

A raft is constructed of wood having a density of 6.00x102 kg/m3. Its surface area is 5.70 m2 and its volume is 0.80 m3. When the raft is placed in fresh water, to what depth h is the raft submerged by its weight? The density of fresh water is 1000 kg/m3.
