In the experiment of moment of inertia, are there any torques being ignored? What are they? Do they may significantly altered the results?

Answer #1

In the experiment of moment of inertia , torque of friction force is ignored (mainly air friction force) or drag force.

When the body rotates friction force due to air will act on body in the opposite direction of motion. It depends on the shape of the body and velocity of body. If the surface area on which air is striking is small then it's effect will be less.

Or for high speed experiment it can not be ignored because drag force is proportional to velocity.

Other force is deformation force.

The force causing deformation in the body or when a soft body rotates then it's mass will shift toward peripheral and it's moment of inertia will increase.

Two disks are rotating about the same axis. Disk A has a moment of inertia of 3.1 kg · m2 and an angular velocity of +8.0 rad/s. Disk B is rotating with an angular velocity of -9.3 rad/s. The two disks are then linked together without the aid of any external torques, so that they rotate as a single unit with an angular velocity of -2.2 rad/s. The axis of rotation for this unit is the same as that for...
