When you dry laundry (e.g., towel), do you dry it better vertically or do you dry it better horizontally? (view point of heat transfer)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The process of heat transfer mostly concerned of laundry is convection which is given by

Q = hAT

Where Q is the heat Transfer

h = heat Transfer coefficient

A is the surface area

And delta T is the change in temperature

So when cloths like towel are placed horizontally in laundry then the surface area of the cloth which we are going to dry is lower as compared to vertical position because the hot air is coming form the the vertical surface of the the machine and going down into the machine by becoming cool air and this process goes on and on and finally our clothes become dry. Hence the vertical position of clothes like towel will make it more quick dry. As the hot air is light and cold air is heavier so cold air will goes down and hot air remains at the top until it dry the clothes or take our moisture form it.
