Why do the lighting system in your building have parallel circuits instead of series circuits?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There are two reasons of connecting lighting system in parallel in our building.

(i) Consider the situation when the lighting bulbs are connected in series. If any one of the bulb is damaged (means open circuited) then current will not flow through the whole circuit and not a single bulb will able to glow.

(ii) Second reason is that, in series circuit when we add the bulbs, means we are increasing the resistance linearly.

Because in series circuit, total resistance = R1 + R2 + R3 + R4 +.............................

Our voltage is fixed, so the resulting current will be low and the bulbs will get dimmer.

Therefore, these are the two reasons why we connect the lighting system in our building in parallel not in series.

Series/Parallel Circuits: When unequal resistors are connected in series across an ideal battery, the same power is dissipated in each one. the potential difference across each is the same. the equivalent resistance of the circuit is equal to the average of all the resistances. the current flowing in each is the same. the equivalent resistance of the circuit is less than that of the smallest resistor.
