Is it possible to place a satellite in orbit so that it is always directly above 60°N latitude? Explain why or why not
To place a satellite in orbit so that it is always directly
above 60 deg N latitude means, we have to place the satellite in a
geostationary orbit. Such an orbit must be equatorial — located
directly above the Earth's equator. The satellite orbits in exactly
the same amount of time as it takes the Earth to rotate on its
axis, so the satellite stays above the same point on the Earth's
surface at all times.
But again, this only works if the orbit is directly above the
equator. Location of equator is 0 deg. Therefore, we cannot place a
statellite in an orbit that is always directly above 60 deg N
latitude.
