A set of crash tests consists of running a test car moving at a speed of 12.2 m/s (26.8 m/h) into a solid wall. Strapped securely in an advanced seat belt system, a 67.0 kg (147.4 lbs) dummy is found to move a distance of 0.720 m from the moment the car touches the wall to the time the car is stopped. Calculate the size of the average force which acts on the dummy during that time. Using the direction of motion as positive direction, calculate the average acceleration of the dummy during that time (in g's) (use 1g=9.8 m/s2). In a different car, the distance the dummy moves while being stopped is reduced from 0.720 m to 0.270 m calculate the average force on the dummy as that car stops.

In a crash test, a car of mass 1.43 103 kg collides with a wall and rebounds as shown in the figure. The initial and final velocities of the car are vi = -15.5 m/s and vf = 2.81 m/s, respectively. If the collision lasts for 0.142 s, find the following. A quarterback is set up to throw the football to a receiver who is running with a constant velocity ~vr directly away from the quarterback and is now a distance D away from the quarterback. The quarterback estimates that the ball must be thrown at an angle θ to the horizontal and the receiver must catch the ball a time interval tc after it is thrown. Assume the ball is thrown and caught at the same height y = 0...
