The moon Io orbits Jupitor at a distance of 421800 Km with period 1.769 days. If the Ganymede orbits Jupiter at a distance of 1070400 Km, what is its period?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We know from keplers third law that

where T is the time period and 'r' is the radius of orbit

From the above equatio it is clearly visible that T2 ? r3 that is T ? r3/2

So T = 1.769*(1070400/421800)3/2 = 7.15 earth days

A satellite or moon orbits a planet with a period Ps. At the same time, the satelliteplanet system orbits a star with a period Pp. Assume that the satellite–planet distance is smaller than the Hill instability limit, so that this system is stable. Show that this implies that P?s < P?p. Assume coplanar circular orbits for simplicity, and assume that ms < m?p < m?t, where m?s, m?p, and m?t are the masses of the satellite, planet, and star, respectively.
