Write down the conservation of energy equation for heat when a mass of aluminium (Al), at a temperature of 100℃ (T1), is added to a copper (Cu) container holding some cool water, at a temperature (T2). Underneath each term indicate the process involved, e.g. aluminium block cools (Q1), cool water warms (Q2) and copper container warms (Q3). Your equation must contain all these variables mwater,mCu, mAl cwater, cCu and cAl; the initial temperatures T1 and T2; and the final equilibrium temperature T3.

Answer #1

Solution:

From the given thermal energy equilibrium,

Heat lost from aluminium[Q1] = Heat gained by water [Q2] + Heat gained by copper[Q3]

Now,

Q1 = mAlcAl[T1 - T3] [Heat lost]

Q2 = mwatercwater[T3 - T2] [Heat gained]

Q3 = mCucCu[T3 - T2] [Heat gained]

Now Substitute the value in above energy equation.

mAlcAl[T1 - T3] = mwatercwater[T3 - T2] + mCucCu[T3 - T2]
