the diameter of the base of a tapered drinking cup is 5.0 cm. The diameter of its mouth is 8.4 cm. The path of the cup curves when you roll it on top of the table. Which end, the base or the mouth rolls faster and how much faster?
thank you! :)

Answer #1

Given values are:

Diameter of base of cup(D1) = 5.0 cm

radius of base of cup(r1) = 5.0 /2 = 2.5 cm

Diameter of mouth of cup(D2) = 8.4 cm

radius of mouth of cup(r2) = 8.4 /2 = 4.2 cm

When cup rolls on top of the table angular speed of mouth(w1 )and base(w2) are equal

w1 = w2

v1 / r1 = v2 / r2 (from the relation of linear velocity and angular velocity v = r w )

v2 / v1 =  r2 /r1

v2 = ( r2 /r1 ) * v1   eq(1)

here v1 and v2 are linear velocities of base of cup and mouth of cup

put the values of r1 and r2 in eq(1)

v2 = (4.2 / 2.5 ) * v1

v2 = 1.68 v1

Hence Mouth of Cup rolls 1.68 times faster than base of the cup

Calvin is drinking milk through a straw. The straw has a diameter of 4 mm, which is much narrower than the cup itself. The straw has a length L = 18 cm, and the level of milk in the cup is H = 11 cm. At this instant, the absolute pressure in Calvin’s mouth is only 95.9 percent of atmospheric pressure. Milk has the same density as water. With what speed does the milk travel through the straw? A uniform solid marble, of mass m = 20.0 g and diameter 1.00 cm, rolls without sliding down a large symmetric steel bowl, starting from rest at point A, at the top of the left(no-slip) side. The top of each side is a distance h = 15.0 cm above the bottom of the bowl. The left half of the bowl is rough enough to cause the marble to roll without slipping, but the right half of the bowl is frictionless...

Acid-Base Behavior In addition to following the general safety rules, chemicals need to be handled properly. In particular, two very important classes of compounds called acids and bases require special attention. These compounds are commonly used reagents in the laboratory; therefore, understanding their proper disposal is beneficial. Physical differences between acids and bases can be detected by the some of the five senses, including taste and touch. Acids have a sour or tart taste and can produce a stinging sensation...
