discuss briefly the function of both electric and magnetic fields on different types of particle accelerators

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A particle accelerator is a machine that accelerates elementary particles, such as electrons or protons, to very high energies.

The beam of particles travels inside a vacuum in the metal pipe.

ELECTRIC FIELD

Particle accelerators use electic fields to accelerate and increase the energy of a beam of particles (electron proton)

MAGNETIC FIELD

Magnetic field are used to steer or in other word to change the direction and focus the beam.

The more energy a particle has, the greater the magnetic field needed to bend its path.
