Problem    Solving
– You    normally    drive    on    the    freeway    between    Manila    and    Laguna    at    an    average    speed    of    96    km/ h,    and    the    trip    takes    2    h    and    10    min.    On    a    rainy    day    you    decide    to    slow    down    and    drive    the    same    distance    at    an    average    speed    of    80    km/h.    How    much    longer    does    the    trip    take?

  A    car    3.5    m    in    length    and    traveling    at    a    constant    speed    of    12    m/s    is    approaching    an    intersection.    The    width    of    intersection    is    20    m.    The    light    turns    yellow    when    the    front    of    the    car    is    50    m    from    the    beginning    of    intersection.    If    the    driver    steps    on    the    break,    the    car    will    slow    at    -‐4.2    m/s/s.    If    the    driver    instead    steps    on    the    gas    pedal,    the    car    will    accelerate    at    1.5    m/s/s.    The    light    will    be    yellow    for    3.0    s.    Ignore    the    reaction    time    of    the    driver.    To    avoid    being    in    the    intersections    while    the    light    is    red,    should    the    driver    hit    the    pedal    or    the    gas    pedal?

You are driving toward a traffic signal when it turns yellow. Your speed is the legal speed limit of v0 = 55 km/h; your best deceleration rate has the magnitude a = 5.18 m/s2. Your best reaction time to begin braking is T = 0.75 s. To avoid having the front of your car enter the intersection after the light turns red, should you brake to a stop or continue to move at 55 km/h if the distance to the...

Suzy likes to drive with a silly sun ball on her car antenna. The frontal area of the ball is 0.0040 m2. As gas prices rise, her husband is concerned that she is wasting fuel because of the additional drag on the ball. He runs a quick test in the wind tunnel at his university and measures the drag coefficient to be 0.30 at nearly all air speeds. Determine the overall car efficiency (with 2 decimal places) if 300 litres...
