A brass vat is 18 m long at room temperature (20°C). How much longer is it when it contains boiling water at 1 atm pressure?

_______m

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Expansion of solid with increase in tempreture, , is
= L
where L is length of solid, is coefficient of expansion ( for Brass it is 1.9x10-5 per degC)
At 1 atm presssure, tempreture of boiling water = 100 oC, hence = 80 oC
= 18*1.9x10-5*80
        = 0.027 m
