Alice and Ben are standing in the middle of an ice rink without any ice skates. To reach the edge of the rink, they decide that Alice will push off of Ben, causing them both to slide along the ice in opposite directions. Alice has a mass of 60 kg, and Ben has a mass of 80 kg. If Alice pushes on Ben with a force of 150 N, what is the acceleration that they each feel?

Answer #1

Answer :

Given :

Mass of Alice (mAlice) = 60 kg

Mass of Ben (mBen) = 80 kg

Alice pushes on Ben with a force (F) =150 N

According to Newton's third law : The force experience by Alice will be same as the force experienced by Ben (Action-Reaction).

And, Acceleration is given by : a = F / m (From Newton's Second law)

Therefore:

Acceleration of Alice (aAlice) = F / mAlice = (150 N) / (60 kg) = 2.5 m/s2

Acceleration of Ben (aBen) = F / mBen = (150 N) / (80 kg) = 1.875 m/s2
