4. [4pt]

Indicate whether the following statements are true or false.
(Select T-True, F-False. If the first is T and the rest F, enter
TFFFFF).

A) Distances to most stars in the Milky Way are measured by spectroscopic parallax (main-sequence fitting).
B) Matter is spread uniformly throughout the Universe.
C) The nearest large spiral Galaxy, similar in size to the Milky Way, is the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). It is located about 2 million light years from Earth.
D) RR Lyrae and Cepheid variable stars are used to measure the distance to nearby galaxies.
E) The disk of the Milky Way galaxy is about 1,000 light years in diameter.
F) If we find an O type star, it must be a population I star.

I GOT THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS BUT ARE WRONG

A) Distances to most stars in the Milky Way are measured by spectroscopic parallax - FALSE

B) Matter is spread uniformly throughout the universe - TRUE

C) The nearest large spiral Galaxy ,similar in size to the Milky way is the Andromeda Galaxy -TRUE

D)RR Lyrae and Cepheid variable stars are used to measure the distance to nearby galaxies - TRUE

E) The disk of the Milky way is about 1000 light years in diameter - TRUE

F) If we find an o type star it must be a population I star - FALSE

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. TRUE - Astronomers follow the effect of parallax to measure distances to nearby stars.Usually stellar parallax method is used to measure distances.

2.FALSE- Matter is not spread uniformly and it can be supported by the fact that the different the hydrogen started getting collected and gravity pulled it together and started stars and galaxies but they are not alike, if the matter is equispread all should have same dimensions.

3.TRUE-

4.TRUE- Henrietta Leavitt discovered that the period of pulsation in a cepheid star and its brightness. Brighter stars are known to have longer periods. This period - luminousity relation could be used to measure the distances of galaxies.

5. FALSE-the diameter of milkyway galaxy is 100000-180000 light years

6. TRUE- the o type star is extreme population 1 star

True or false? A transiting exoplanet that blocks 0.01 percent of the parent star’s light has 1 10 of the star’s radius. True or false? If 20 percent of stars have Earth-like planets in the habitable zone orbiting them, and there are about 1 trillion stars in our Local Group of galaxies (of which the Milky Way Galaxy is a member), then there are roughly 200 billion such planets in the Local Group of galaxies.
