In the Waves and Sound experiment, you snap your fingers at the top of the plastic tube and the software indicates that 8.11 ms passed from the beginning of the snap to the beginning of the reflected pulse of sound. The height of the tube is 1.40 meters. What is the temperature of the air in the room in Celsius? Enter a number in the format ## with no decimal point.

Answer is 24 with margin 0.2. How?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Time of sound to move in one direction=8.11/2=4.055ms=4.055Xsec ( as it is reflected at other end)

distance travelled for it =1.4meter

speed of sound   v=1.4/4.055X=345.25m/s

Also    v=

=Cp/Cv=1.4 (air)

R=gas constant=8.314

T=temperature=?

M=molecualr mass of air=0.02897kg/mol

v=

=RT/M

T=M/(R)=0.02897X/(1.4X8.314)=296.67Kelvin=296.67-273=23.67Celcius (nearly equal to 24C)
