The terms emission, fluorescence, and phosphorescence all describe electronic transitions.
a. In what ways are these three terms similar?
b. How are they different?
Emission is the phenomenon in which an excited electron lower its energy by emitting photon. Emission is the bases of fluorescence, and phosphorescence.
Spontaneous emission is the similarity in fluorescence and phosphorescence are of electromagnetic radiation. The difference is that the glow of fluorescence stops right after the source is switched off, whereas for phosphorescence, an afterglow with durations of fractions of a second up to hours can occur. Phosphorescence usually occurs only with "heavier" molecules since the spin has to be reversed with the help of spin-orbit-coupling.
