An attached copper wire of diameter 0.7348 cm stretches by 1% when a load is applied to it. Find the force applied (F=?$). Note that one can find Young's modulus on the internet or in the textbook.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Young's modulus for copper(E) is 117 GPa.

The rire straches by 1% that means the normal strain in the wire is 0.01.

Calculate the normal stress in the copper wire.

E = Normal stress/ normal strain

117*10^9 = Normal stress/0.01

Normal stress = 117*10^7 N

Calculate the applied force.

F = Normal stress*A

= Normal stress*(pi/4)d^2

= (117*10^7)*(pi/4)( 0.7348*10^-2)^2

= 49615.12 N
