A 55-kg diver stands at the end of a diving board located 10 m above the water level. The diving board is held down at one end by an anchor bolt. The fulcrum is located at 1.4 m from the bolt and the total length of the board is 3.9 m.
a) Draw a free body diagram showing the forces acting on the diver.
(b) Calculate the torque that she exerts on the board with respect to the fulcrum. Neglect the mass of the board.
(c) Calculate the forces that the bolt and the fulcrum exert on the board.
The diver springs upwards to a height of 1.2 m above the board and dives into water. Ignoring air resistance:
(d) Find her initial vertical velocity at the instant of jumping.
(e) Find her speed when she enters the water. This time assume
the diver’s trajectory to be projectile. (Hint: use work-energy
theorem)
