(8 point charges on a cube) A cube of edge a carries a point charge q at each corner. (a) Show that the magnitude of the resultant force on any one of the charges is F = 3.29kq2/a2. (b) What is the direction of F? relative to the cube edges?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a. the magnitude of thge resultant force at one corner can be obtained by applying parallelogram law of vectors. so the resultant force

Fr2 = F21 + F22 + 2 F1x F2 Cos = 2F2 ( 1 + Cos )

however the value of the individual force are same and equal to F1 = F2= 1/ 40 kq2 / a2

       since = 90/2 = 450

so       Fr= 2x (9x10x kq2/a2 ) ( 1 + Cos450)   = 3.29kq2/a2

b. the direction is 45 degree away from the diagonal of the cube
