A thin 1 m long uniform rod with a total mass of 750g is suspended vertically at the upper end. The moment of inertia of the rod in respect to the center of mass is mL*2/12 (where L is the total lenght of the rod). A 9 g bullet is shot to the lower end of the rod and embeds there. The bullet speed before impact is 580 m/s. Calculate the amount of energy transfered to the heat during the collision.

A uniform stick 1.0 m long with a total mass of 300.0 g is pivoted at its center. A 3.0 g bullet is shot through the stick midway between the pivot and one end. The bullet approaches at 250 m/s and leaves at 160 m/s. With what angular speed is the stick spinning after the collision, if the bullet strikes the stick perpendicularly? (The moment of inertia of a uniform stick rotating about its center is I = (1/12)mL2.)

A uniform thin rod of length 0.45 m and mass 6.5 kg can rotate in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis through its center. The rod is a rest when a 3.0-g bullet traveling in the horizontal plane of the rod is fired into one end of the rod. As viewed from above, the direction of the bullet velocity makes an angle of 60° with the rod (see the figure). If the bullet lodges in the rod and the...

A uniform thin rod of length 0.56 m and mass 3.2 kg can rotate in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis through its center. The rod is at rest when a 3.5 g bullet traveling in the rotation plane is fired into one end of the rod. As viewed from above, the bullet's path makes angle θ = 60° with the rod. If the bullet lodges in the rod and the angular velocity of the rod is 12.0 rad/s...
