Doppler ultrasound is used to measure the speed of blood flow. The reflected sound interferes with the emitted sound, producing beats. If the speed of red blood cells is 0.100 m/s, the ultrasound frequency used is 3.80 MHz, and the speed of sound in blood is 1570 m/s, what is the beat frequency? If the speed of the red blood cells is v, the speed of sound in blood is u, the ultrasound source emits waves of frequency f, and we assume that the blood cells are moving directly toward the ultrasound source, then the frequency fr of reflected waves detected by the apparatus is given by  fr = fu+vu−vfr = fu+vu-v . Express your answer in Hz.

a Doppler ultrasound machine can measure blood flow speeds, for instance, in a patient’s artery. The probe is illustrated below. First, here are two questions about the Doppler effect: When a listener is moving away a stationary source that emits a sound wave of frequency f, the listener will hear a sound of   ["smaller frequency", "the same frequency", "greater frequency"]           When a source that emits a sound wave of frequency f moves away a stationary listener, the listener...

You are examining bloodflow in a blood vessel using Doppler sonography. Original frequency of ultrasound emitted by the device is 2.50 MHz. After mixing the incoming frequency reflected from a bloodstream in the blood vessel with the original frequency of the device, the device produces a beat frequency of 974 Hz. You are asked to calculate the diameter of the blood vessel if the volumetric flow rate of the blood stream in the blood vessel is measured to be 5×10-6m3/s....

An echocardiogram uses sound to measure blood flow and heart function. (I’ve had this done, it is cool to watch!)
