Suppose you have have a 1100 W toaster.

a)  How much electrical energy in J is needed to make a slice of toast (cooking time = 1 minute)?

b) At 11.5 cents/kWh, how many cents does this cost?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a)

Power=1100 W

time = 60 s

Electrical energy =Power * time

                         =1100*60=66000 J

b) Convert energy to kWhr (kilo 1000    hr= 60*60 =3600 kilo- hr= )

        1 joule =(1/3600000)kWhr

     66000J=0.018 kwhr

       Cent required= 0.018*11.65=0.21 cent

Suppose that Linfield’s energy all came from hydroelectric power (in fact, most of it does). How large of a reservoir would be needed to supply Linfield College with electricity for one year? Make an estimate. State your assumptions clearly. [Hints and useful info: Linfield used 8.7 million kWh (8.7x106 kWh) in the 2009 fiscal year. A kWh is a common unit of electrical energy, where 1 kWh = 3.61x106 J = 2.65 x 106 ft-lb. Make reasonable estimate for the...
