A manometer is attached to a container of gas to determine its pressure. Before the container is attached, both sides of the manometer are open to the atmosphere. After the container is attached, the mercury on the side attached to the gas container rises 12 cm above its previous level. (a) What is the gauge pressure of the gas in Pa? (b) What is the absolute pressure of the gas in Pa?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Since the level of mercury is rised by 12 cm , the other side also have lowered by the same amount. So the total difference in the mercury level is h = 12 + 12 = 24 cm

(a)

Atmospheric Pressure,

Density of Mercury,

(b)

Ethanol is in a closed tank and the level indicator has broken. Your boss requests that you determine the height (and therefore the volume) of the ethanol in the tank (the tank is partially full and there is a gas phase above the liquid). Connected to the very bottom of the tank is an open-ended manometer using mercury. On the tank side of the manometer tube, there is 500. mm of ethanol above the mercury. The height differential of the...

A pressure gauge is constructed out of a container where one side of the container consists of a piston (with a cross sectional area of 0.01m^2) attached to a spring. When all of the air is evacuated from the inside of the container (the pressure in the container is 0 Pa), the spring compresses by 0.15m. a) What is the spring constant of the spring used in this device? b) I take this pressure gauge to the bottom of a...

Chapter 5- Gases 24. As weather balloons rise from the earth's surface, the pressure of th atmosphere becomes less, tending to cause the volume of the balloons to exand. However, the temperature is much lower in the upper atmosphere that at sea level. Would this temperature effect tend to make such a balloon expand or contract? Weather balloons do, in fact, expand as they rise. What does this tell you? 37. Freon-12 (CF2Cl2) is commonly used as the refrigerant in...
