True or False: An astronaut on the International Space Station is said to be weightless. This means that the astronaut is not under the influence of gravity.
True
False
Wouldn't an astronaut be under the influence of gravity, but their "free fall" zero's out the effect?
False, actually space station revolves around Earth and which is possible only when Earth exerts a gravitational force on it. The same force is also acting on astronaut.
While revolving around Earth both are under centripetal force directed towards center of Earth provided by Earths gravitational force. Therefore both have under free fall directed toward center of Earth. Due to which surface of space ship does not exert any normal reaction on astronaut hence astronaut feels weightless.
