In non-isolated systems, the energy transfers into or out of the system via several
ways, discuss these ways.

Answer #1

Ways of energy exchange with the non-isolated system are via work , heat and matter.

  • Matter:- when system is closed no matter can cross the boundary of the system. But if system is open, matter can be exchanged with the system.
  • Heat:- heat exchange can take place in both open and closed system with the surrounding.
  • Work:- work is observed at the boundary of system so closed system can exchange work with surrounding while flow work exchange is associated with the open system.

Consider two isolated systems of non-interacting spins with NA = 4 and NB = 16 spins, respectively. Each spin has a magnetic moment µ that can point either up or down. The energies are simply the sums over the oriented magnetic moments and the initial energies are EA = −2µ and EB = −2µ. 1.
