A quantity of gas in a piston cylinder is at room temperature (20°C) and is heated in an isobaric(constant pressure)process. What will be the temperature of the gas in degrees Celsius when it has expanded to a volume of 0.600m3?

Answer #1

From Charles' law

At constant pressure, volume of gas is directly proportional to absolute temperature of gas.

Here initial temperature, = 20°C or 293 Kelvin

initial volume of gas, V1 = 0.100 m^3

Final volume of gas, V2 = 0.600 m^3

Let final temperature be T2

So V T

So V1/ V2 = T1 / T2

So T2 = (293)(0.600)/ (0.100)

So T2 = 1758 Kelvin

Therefore final temperature will be 1758 kelvin or 1485°C

A cylinder of monatomic ideal gas is sealed in a cylinder by a piston. Initially, the gas occupies a volume of 3.00 L and the pressure is initially 105 kPa. The cylinder is placed in an oven that maintains the temperature at a constant value. 65.0 J of work is then done on the piston, compressing the gas (in other words, the gas does −65.0 J of work). The work is done very slowly so that the gas maintains a...

A cylinder with a movable piston contains 2.00 g of helium, He, at room temperature. More helium was added to the cylinder and the volume was adjusted so that the gas pressure remained the same. How many grams of helium were added to the cylinder if the volume was changed from 2.00 L to 2.526 L ? (The temperature was held constant.) Enter your answer in units of grams. Please show all work
