A neutral Ping Pong ball hangs from the ceiling by a thread. A person rubs a rubber rod with animal fur and then touches the Ping Pong ball with the rubber rod. After that, what is the charge of the Ping Pong ball?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

When the rubber rod is rubbed with animal fur, the rod becomes negatively charged (as the electrons are transferred from the fur to the rod);

Then the negatively charged rod touched the neutral ping pong ball, the negative charge also distributed over the ball. it also make the ping pong ball negatively charged.

.

Actually the neutral ball have equal amount of positive and negative charge. If we only bring the negative charged rod near to ping pong ball (without touch) the positive charge comes near the rod side and negative charge away from that side.

An initially neutral rubber rod is rubbed with fur, so that the fur becomes positive. The rod then briefly touches an uncharged electroscope and the leaves of the electroscope separate and stay separated even after the rod is removed. Finally, a second rod with an unknown charge comes near the electroscope without touching it and the leaves of the electroscope move farther apart. What is the charge of the second rod?

a. We have a negatively charged rubber rod and a neutral pith ball that are far apart and don’t affect each other. The rubber rod is then brought near the pith ball but does not touch it. Will the pith ball be repelled, attracted, or not affected? Explain your answer in detail. b. Now assume that we do the demonstration again starting from scratch and that the negatively charged rubber rod touches the neutral pith ball. Afterwards, the rubber rod...
