Find the approximate length of the Golden Gate bridge if it is known that the steel in the roadbed expands by 0.53 m when the temperature +2 C to +32 C. Please explain step by step thanks

Answer #1

Relation between length and temperature change is given by:

dL = L0**dT

dL = change in length = 0.53 m

dT = temperature change = Tf - Ti = 32 - 2 = 30 C

= linear thermal expansion coefficient for steel = 12*10^-6 /C

So L0 = original length of golden gate bridge = ?

L0 = dL/(*dT)

L0 = 0.53/(12*10^-6*30)

L0 = 1472 m = approximate length of Golden gate bridge

Interest centers on Young’s modulus, E, for steel members of the Golden Gate Bridge. Assume that the randomness E can be described by a normal random variable. Its mean and standard deviation were estimated as 29,575 ksi and 1,500 ksi, respectively. The design value of Young’s modulus for steel is 29,000 ksi. Assume E can be measured to any degree of precision. Clearly state which distribution you are using to arrive at your solution, for all parts of this question....
