Errors in positioning the ruler attached to the gel cassette will result in a consistent shift in your measurements of the distances.

a. What kind of error is this?

b. Would this affect your calculation of velocities?

This is a lab question from protein gel electrophoresis

Answer #1

Solution:

The type of error involved in this is called Systematic error. Systematic errors are the errors whicharise when there is a fault with the measuring instrument. When the ruler used to measure the distances is not accurate, it'll give rise to Systematic errors.

This error can be avoided by taking more than one reading simultaneously , under the sae conditions Another possibility of error may arise due to improper rounding of the easureents taken. It is possible that the reading may be taken as an overestimate or an underestimate of the value. That can be avoided by taking an intermediate value of the measured length .

b) That effects the caculation of velocities , with varying degrees of uncertainity. If the error is insignificant , then it does not effect the velocity calculations.

Lab 9 – Molecular Biology In this lab, you will prepare an agarose gel and use gel electrophoresis to compare the size of 2 dye molecules Methyl orange and Ponceau G. You will also analyze an “unknown” sample that contains a mixture of two dyes. Dye molecules with lower molecular weight or greater electrical charge will migrate faster through the gel, than dye molecules with greater molecular weights or lesser electrical charge. Materials: Mini gel electrophoresis chamber 6 Tooth comb...

1. Error Rate in Protein Synthesis It is often said that protein complexes are made from subunits (that is,individually synthesized proteins) rather than as one long protein because it is more likely to give a correct final structure. a. Assuming an error rate of 1/10,000, what fraction of bacterial ribosomes would be constituted correctly if the proteins were synthesized from one large protein versus assembled from individual proteins? For sake of calculation assume that the ribosome is composed of 50...

A 10-year old black male child named Michael Jones was admitted to the hospital because he was experiencing severe chest pain. He had been hospitalized on several previous occasions for vaso-occlusive episodes that caused him to experience severe pain that could not be managed with non-prescription drugs such as ibuprofen. He was slightly jaundiced, short of breath and easily tired, and feverish. A chest x-ray was taken and was abnormal. An arterial blood sample showed a PO2 value of 6...

Center the black conductive paper on the top of the box, grid-side up. Place the two metal nuts (conductors) at the (5 cm, 10 cm) and (20 cm, 10 cm) positions on the paper. Secure using two dissection pins for each conductor. See Figure 13. Note: Place the...
