Without glasses, your Uncle Albert can see things clearly only if they are between 20 cm and 180 cm from his eyes. Part A What power eyeglass lens will correct your uncle's myopia? Assume the lenses will sit 2.0 cm from his eyes. Part B What is your uncle's near point when wearing these glasses?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a )by using the lens formula

1 / f = 1 / d o + 1 / di

where

d o =  2.0 cm =0.020 m , di =  180 cm = 1.88 m

1/f = 1/ ( - 0.020 - 1.88 )

= - 0.5263 diopte (where   The refractive power
                    P = 1/ f )

b )  1/ do =   1/ f - 1/ d1

= [1/ ( - 0.020 - 1.88 ) ] - [( 1 / -0.20 - 0.020 ) ]

= - 0.5263 + 4.454

= 4.019 m

di = 0.2488 m = 248.8 cm

In order to see objects at different distances clearly, a person's eyes must be able to adjust the focal length of their lenses. If person can't achieve the full range of focal lengths, they will require corrective lenses to have "normal" vision. The corrective lenses in glasses usually sit about 2cm from a person's eyes. Without her glasses, Dr.D.’s myopic eyes can only image objects that are, at most, 18.5cm awayfrom her eye(this is called her “far point”). Her “near point” (the closest she can image an object) is 10.5 cm from her eye. With this range of vision, she obviously needs glasses. Let’s say we want her glasses to allow her to see an object 20 feet away(not really the same as “20/20” vision.... but close enough). You also need to note her glasses...
