Air drag is like a friction force in that it acts to resist motion of an object through the air. Consider an object falling through the air and select all the correct statements that could describe the motion of the object while it is falling.

1.Since there are always forces acting on the object, it is constantly accelerating (not = 0)

2.The sum of forces on the object could be zero despite falling

3.The speed of the falling object will tend to go down with time

4.Given time, the downward acceleration of the object will approach zero

5.An object can fall at constant speed

6.Newton's second law does not apply since air drag is not a constant force

Homework Answers

Answer #1

although the air drug acts on the body ,but its velocity increases in downward direction and air drag is also increases but acceleration is always is constant. This motion can be described or solve by the newtons 2 nd laws of motion, i.e all forces(body s acceleration in downward direction and dragforce in opposite direction all ) acts upon the body is equal to zero.  the body s speed increses to conserve the energy , as in downward potential energy decrease so kinetic energy as well as velocity increases to conserve the energy. so option 1,2 is correct.

if the body falls from too much height then it reaches to the terminal velocity then its speed will be constant and hence acceleration is zero.

We learned in mechanics that in the absence of air resistance, all objects near Earth’s surface fall with the same constant acceleration g = 9.8 m/s 2 . Yet as a student I once dropped a wadded-up tissue from the top of the Eiffel Tower and watched it take minutes to fall 300 m to Earth. (I retrieved it from the riverbank and put it in the poubelle.) In fluids, such as air or water, frictional drag forces grow larger...

Large objects have inertia and tend to keep moving-Newton's first law. Life is very different for small microorganisms that swim through water. For them, drag forces are so large that they instantly stop, without coasting, if they cease their swimming motion. To swim at constant speed, they must exert a constant propulsion force by rotating corkscrew-like flagella or beating hair-like cilia. The quadratic model of drag given by the equation, D⃗  = (12CρAv2, direction opposite the motion), fails for very small...

In addition to the buoyant force, an object moving in a liquid experiences a linear drag force Fdrag = (bv, direction opposite the motion), where b is a constant. We are currently learning about drag forces and air resistance. My professor asked us to "argue to the v 2 dependence for turbulent flow by considering a falling object of cross sectional area A, speed v and mass M. Assume the air molecules have mass m, density ρ. You can then derive the force on the object in terms of A, ρ and v. " she gave us these hints: turbulent flow formula: F = 1/2 πρCd*r^2 *v^2 Air molecules...

Speed means the absolute value of the velocity, hence it is always non-negative. While the sign of the velocity indicates the direction of the motion, the speed is insensitive to the direction. For example, speed is the value displayed by car’s speedometer; it does not indicate the direction of driving (e.g., northbound versus southbound). At time t = 0 seconds (s) an object has zero velocity and it starts a free fall from the altitude of 1200 metres (m) above...
