What are Kirchoff’s Laws?

What are emission lines and what kind of material will produce them?

What are absorption lines and what kind of material will produce them?

What are three major problems our atmosphere causes for detection of light and what is one way to solve these problems?

Answer #1

Kirchooffs first law:the current entering any junction is equal to the current leaving that junction. This is also known as nodal rule.

Kirchooffs second law:the directed sum of voltages around any closed loop is zero(called kirchooffs voltage law)

Emission line:a emission line will appear in a spectrum if the source emits specific wavelength of radiation. The emission occurs when an atom, element in an excited state return to lower state of energy.

Absorption line:an absorption line will appear in spectrum if the source absorb specific wavelength of radiation. The absorption occur when an atom or element in an lower or lowest state goes to excited state of energy.

Based on what you know about Kirchhoff’s laws of spectroscopy, explain how the Sun’s light can be reflected off a planet’s surface to give astronomers information about the chemical composition of its atmosphere, even though the planet itself is not creating this light. What type of spectrum will this produce (continuous, absorption, or emission)?

This is a challenging multi-step problem. Solve it on paper, writing out each step carefully. When doing calculations, do not round intermediate values. Note: If you have approached the problem in a principled way, do not abandon your approach if your numerical answer is not accepted; check your calculations!
