Figures a and b show a ball in a toy spring gun, oriented with its barrel vertical and opening upwards, as follows. The ball is at the top of the spring, which is compressed a distance x. The ball is still at the top of the spring, but the spring is uncompressed and is at a position marked x = 0. An arrow labeled vector v starts on the ball and extends vertically up.
