Four people with a combined mass of 300 kg are riding in a 1100 kg car. When they drive down a washboard road with bumps spaced 6.9 mm apart, they notice that the car bounces up and down with a maximum amplitude when the car is traveling at 6.1 m/s . The driver stops the car and everyone exits the vehicle.

Part A) How much does the car rise up on its springs?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

Using the simple harmonic motion of the car,

Frequency,

f = v/x = 6.1/6.9*10-3

= 884.06 Hz

Angular frequency,

= 2f = 2*884.06

= 5554.7 rad/s

A) The car raising up is the amplitude of the SHM,

A = vmax/

= 6.1/5554.7

= 1.098*10-3 m

= 1.1 mm,

Two people with a combined mass of 134 kg hop into an old car with worn-out shock absorbers. This causes the springs to compress by 8.50 cm . When the car hits a bump in the road, it oscillates up and down with a period of 1.62 s . Find the total load supported by the springs in kg. Find the mass of the car in kg.
