In a penny and nickel battery, the pennies, which are made of copper, provide the cathode, and the nickels, which are made of zinc, provide the anode.

There are two reasons wnhy we need to start with a penny and end in a nickel.

First, a complete galvanic cell requires both positive and negative electrodes, and hence, both are required for it produce electricity.

Secondly, to complete a series circuit, the positive electrode of one cell has to be connected to the negative electrode of the next cell, and so on.
