Why should a ground wire be connected to the metal support rod for a television antenna?

Answer #1

When a lightning strikes the earth, it generally targets objects which are nearer to reach (protrude out of earth's surface).Trees, poles, antennae are such objects; particularly antennae are made up of conducting material which provides an easy path for lightning to pass through and reach the ground. Earth, on the other hand, is considered to have a tremendous potential to absorb excess charge. Hence, if such an event occurs, the earthing /ground wire disposes off the excess charge from the antenna to the ground safely, without damaging the associated components like TV.

You bring a negatively-charged glass rod close to (but without touching) a neutral metal sphere that is connected to ground by a wire. After waiting a few seconds, the wire is broken (without touching the sphere), and after that the rod is also removed. The shpere is now a. neutral b. positively charged c. negatively charged

A clothes dryer has a three-prong plug and runs on a 220-V outlet. The metal casing of the dryer has an effective resistance of 55 Ω. The body of the person touching the dryer has an effective resistance of 2400 Ω, and the person's feet are touching ground. A copper rod of resistance 0.20 Ω has one end connected to the metal casing and the other end connected to ground. A wire comes loose and contacts the metal casing. How...

A metal sphere is electronically neutral and mounted on an insulating support rod. A small amount of negative charge is then placed at point A on the sphere. Which statement is true? A. The excess charge is uniformly distributed inside the sphere. B. The excess charge has distributed itself uniformly over the surface of the sphere. C. Most of the charge is still at point A, but some will have spread over the sphere. D. All of the excess charge...

Which of the following is the best explanation for why rod-based vision does not support the perception of different hues (or colours)? A. Dark Current: Rods only generate action potentials in the dark, so really code the absence of light. This makes colour vision impossible using these photoreceptors. B. The Principle of Univariance: Variations in both the wavelength and intensity of light result in variation of response in the rod-based system. Because the response from ganglion cells is univariate, both...
